Reflection of week 1 and 2

It is now the end of week 2 and this is a summary of what we have done in class and what we have learned in classes with Stefan.

In the first week, we did a mind map to find the theme of our concept and prepare for the submission of our project proposal for week 3. My mind map consists of a variation of ideas, starting off with what I am interested in. I printed off images to add it in the mind map to give myself a more visual inspiration that could inform my thinking process. We also had to complete a timeline to submit so that we could track our work and progress to stay on track with the pace of work. I had completed the time line on the sketch book but below is the timeline that I have done.

Week 1: Gather a broad amount of research. This should include fashion designers, books, websites, mind map, concept pages and mixed media. Borrowing books and finding inspirations.

Week 2: Finalise concept and idea for final outcome, ready for project proposal submission. Site visits in Nottingham. Written reflections in blog.

Week 3: Deadline for concept and idea experimentation, project proposal and timeline. Moving on to look into designs and concepts for final outcome. Artist analysis done on blog.

Week 4: Using research to design some garments/sketch book pages should include documentation, ideation and exploration. This should include mood board and showing ideas visually.

Week 5: At least a few experimentations done for final outcome and add fabric experimentation into sketch book and blog.

Week 6: Mid-term assessment week. Development for final garments. Find out what works and what does not, last changes should be made. This should include consultations and reflections.

Week 7: Completed final 5 designs and start getting materials to make final garments and start making them.

Week 8: Add process to sketchbook and blog once everything is gathered, continue making garment.

Week 9: Continue to document the making process. If any changed were made, document with reasons and explain differences.

Week 10: Finish up the garment and start shooting for final garment.

Week 11: Completed final outcomes for exhibition.

I also went to the library to look for some inspirations in books. Below are some of the books that I have chosen to look at.

The Art Book by Phaidon

There are many stunning paintings done by famous painters from the renaissance, baroque and many more. I have chosen a few paintings to include into my mind map, using the feelings and colours from the paintings to create a certain kind of mood. The picture below is one of my favourite paintings that caught my eye as there is much going on and I could look at different sections of the paintings. The colours that the Botticelli used also falls within the theme of colours that I really feel it works and would use in my work.

Primavera by Sandro Botticelli

Since I am doing knitwear design, I feel like I should incorporate some kind of knits in my final outcomes just to explore the possibilities. I could mix in different kind of knits, perhaps mixing it with different kind of materials. Below is the book that I found out about the different kind of knitting techniques that created very different looks.

Knitwear in Fashion by Sandy Black
Above is shown some of the interesting textures that knitwear could create through different knitting techniques. All photos above was taken from the book itself.
The Gothic Cathedral by Wim Swaan

Above is a book that I have found several images on gothic architecture and the characteristics and patterns that I can base my designs on. Gothic architecture is extremely distinguishable due to the intricate details of the decorations on the cathedrals especially.

Above shown is one of the examples for the exterior of a typical gothic cathedral.

After looking through the books, the images that I put up are some of the pictures that gave me some sort of inspiration to what my concept might be. I will also be doing artist research and it would be posted on the blog as well. I would continue to do concept pages and use these images that I have gotten to help me with the design process. I realised that I am a little bit slow on capturing a specific concept as I have too many ideas but I guess it would come out eventually as long as I continue working on the concept pages and collaging ideas together and experimenting to explore all sorts of possibilities of materials, textures and colours.
