Gothic Architecture

This post will be about gothic architecture, explaining why it is so special and the influences that would be adapted to my work. I wanted to do more research on Gothic Cathedrals as it was one of my interests and I felt that the motifs and ornaments on Gothic Cathedrals are so elaborate that it could easily be replicated and potentially serve as designs on garments. They have a very unique characteristic as compared to architecture in other periods. It is filled with extremely fine details and some of the defining characteristics includes:

This is a picture I found on the internet that clearly shows the characteristics of gothic architecture. However, I would be sharing more about them below.
Flying buttress
Pointed arch
Spires
Gargoyles
Tracery

Ribbed vaults

The Gothic Cathedral by Swaan

The book above was picked up by me in the Boots Library. There were many helpful images that I really liked and felt that will inspire my designs.

The characteristics listed above like the tracery and the flying buttress could be one of the structures that I could implement in my design or design elements that could make my garments stand out a little bit more. I am going for the avant-garde style so it would be ideal to be a little bit on the crazy side.

Above are some of the examples of gothic architecture in the book. One example of a collection that was inspired by Gothic architecture is definitely the Guo Pei 2018 Fall collection.

The images above are definitely not the entire collection but my apologies for sharing that many photos because I could not decide which one I like best. They all shows some of the characteristics of gothic architecture as mentioned in the first part of my post. This collection will definitely be my main source of inspiration when it comes to implementing gothic architecture elements into my final outcomes.
